Utility and the Roots of SVSV

Posted in Craft, Design, Fashion, KDU on September 2, 2010 by davidgensler

I am beginning to look at the original inspirations that forced me to develop the SVSV brand in 2003.
There is something that draws us into purity. Something of the earth and part of our nature. When fashion is dictated mostly by function, this purity (or a version of it) becomes most visible.

Another Addition: Mamiya C330

Posted in Gadgets, Photography on September 2, 2010 by davidgensler

Medium Format Twin Lens.

In school I picked Mamiya as my medium format camera of choice. I still have my RZ67 Pro 2 studio camera.
I finally got around to securing a complete c330 kit. Three Bodies and 5 lenses.  The perfect portable 6×6 companion.

Mamiya’s Blue Dot lenses for the C330 are some of the sharpest I have ever shot. These cameras can be easily found on eBay at great prices.

LEICATIME & Craftsman Luigi Crescenzi

Posted in Craft, Photography on September 2, 2010 by davidgensler

I take exceptional care of my cameras (and all precious possessions).
I take pride in the respect I show the objects I decide to invest in and make part of my life.

I believe putting a fine tool in a poorly constructed bag or case is a crime.

Nothing speaks to quality and tradition better than a handcrafted case from Rome, Italy based Leicatime.

Mr. Luigi Crescenzi personally hand makes each object.  His attention to detail is unmatched.

He crafts cases for Leicas, Voigtlanders and other fine cameras.

New Glass

Posted in Gadgets, Photography on September 2, 2010 by davidgensler

As a tool, a camera, even the mighty Leica is only as good as the lens you are shooting through.
In my pursuit of a new creative freedom, independent from influence or interaction with others (and at my own pace) – I carefully selected Voigtlander lenses for the new Leica m9.

The sharpest and fastest is the 50mm 1.1. Nokton. Check back for some initial test shots and exploration.

Next is the 15mm 4.5. Not as fast, but a great and versatile lens. The edges have a wonderful vignetting fall off of light.

Last is the 35mm 1.4. Probably the most useful and flexible lens of the group.  This is the lens I typically leave on the camera if I am just walking around the city.

The Witness to an Age

Posted in Gadgets, Photography on September 1, 2010 by davidgensler

This Leica is currently on eBay for $108,000.

Similar to my fascination with Tailors shears, The Leica is an almost perfect tool. Modern improvements often detract from the purity of its function.

Leica CL Rangefinder

Posted in Gadgets, KDU, Photography on September 1, 2010 by davidgensler

Recent addition to the camera collection. Leica CL. 40mm 1.2 Summicron
This was the smallest and lightest Leica ever made.

Leica also collaborated with Minolta of Japan to produce the Minolta CLE.
Anyone looking to get into the world of rangefinders should check out both these models.
